Mixing

ANDY SHAUF

Mixing live concert recordings is a lot of fun, but a very different animal, and can be quite different than working with studio tracks. Often they are paired with video so you have to follow the stage positions of the musicians and not veer from the actual performance. It helps when the band and recording are great as they were in this case (Recorded for SouthernSouls).

Mixing

LIDO PIMIENTA / NPR Tiny Desk Concerts

The key in this mix was keeping it in line with the spirit of the original version while ensuring a balance of blend and clarity to a live performance with a lot of performers in a relatively small space. I was handed well recorded tracks of a great band which is always a great place to start.

Recording + Mix

THE ACORN
Paper Bag Records

While much of this album was recorded at a cottage in Gatineau, we did a few tunes, including this one, with Kees Dekker at the Treatment Room in Montreal, with Rolf adding additional overdubs at home. The key to the mix was sifting through the numerous tracks and bringing out the song's essence while retaining its inherent intimacy and atmosphere. It turned out wonderfully as evidenced by it having been used several times in film and television (Crazy, Stupid, Love; BBC’s Wanderlust starring Toni Collette).

Recording + Mix

SAINT CLARE

Rock and roll ain't dead and bands like Saint Clare prove it. The band and I share a passion for recording live (with only vocals and horns as overdubs) and then highlighting that infectious energy in the mix.
